1. Select membrane, coated, or waxed fabrics for weather resistance

 

Membrane fabrics, whether microporous or hydrophilic, form a barrier to liquid water while allowing vapour to escape, which reduces internal condensation in prolonged rain. When comparing options, check hydrostatic head, which indicates how much water pressure a fabric will withstand before leaking, and breathability figures such as MVTR, moisture vapour transmission rate, or RET, resistance to evaporative heat transfer. For sustained waterproofing, favour fully taped seams and a bonded membrane laminate. Coated fabrics use a continuous polyurethane or silicone layer on the face or back of the textile, making them durable and abrasion resistant but typically less breathable. If you choose a coated garment, look for deliberate ventilation such as pit zips or mesh-lined pockets, and maintain the surface finish with the reproofing recommended for that coating.

 

By contrast, waxed cotton repels water thanks to a surface wax, accepts local repair and re-waxing, and develops a durable waterproof patina. It will, however, wet out under prolonged driving rain, so consider reinforced shoulder panels, overlapping flaps, and regular re-waxing to restore performance. Real-world waterproofing depends as much on construction as on fabric. Fully taped seams, storm flaps over zips, an adjustable close-fitting hood with a peak, a long hem, articulated sleeves, and reinforcement in high-wear areas all reduce water ingress. Equally important is ventilation: garments that balance membranes or coatings with vents and a comfortable fit manage sweat and remain wearable during activity. Test and care for waxed garments to maintain performance. Do a simple spray test to locate weak spots, inspect seam taping and storm flaps, reproof or re-wax as the maker specifies, avoid detergents that strip finishes, and mend small holes promptly. These measures extend service life and reduce environmental impact.

2. Prioritise breathability, sealed seams, and a considered fit

 

When comparing jackets, ask for MVTR, RET, and hydrostatic head figures rather than rely on marketing labels. These three metrics describe how a jacket manages moisture and resists water: MVTR, expressed in g/m2/24h, measures how much vapour the fabric allows to escape, with higher values meaning greater breathability; RET measures evaporative resistance, with lower values indicating easier heat and moisture transfer away from the body; hydrostatic head, given in millimetres, shows the water pressure the fabric can withstand before it soaks through, with higher numbers signalling greater protection in heavy rain. For active use, favour higher MVTR and lower RET, and choose a hydrostatic-head rating suited to sustained downpours. Inspect seam sealing by turning the garment inside out and checking that seam tape or welded seams run continuously along every stitch line, not just the shoulders. Prioritise fully taped or welded construction in high-stress areas such as the cuffs, around the hood, the hem, and alongside zippers and storm flaps.

 

Try the jacket on over the base layer and mid layer you normally wear. Raise your arms, bend, and mimic carrying a rucksack to check the hem, cuffs, and hood remain in place while leaving enough room for a mid layer without excessive looseness. Look for pit zips, mesh-lined pockets, and storm flaps, and use these features to balance weather protection with evaporative cooling rather than relying solely on fabric ratings. Choose a durable face fabric with an effective DWR finish so water beads, and reproof the garment when beading fails. Clean and treat the membrane according to the care instructions, and avoid abrasion and contaminant buildup to preserve both waterproofing and breathability.

3. How to maintain, reproof, and store garments for longevity

 

Brush away grit with a soft brush. Fasten zips and hook-and-loop fastenings, then wash with a specialist technical cleaner or a mild detergent on a gentle machine cycle, or wash by hand to remove oils that attract water. Rinse thoroughly, and avoid fabric softener, as residues clog fibres and reduce water repellency and breathability. To assess durable water repellent (DWR) performance, sprinkle a few drops onto a dry garment: if the water beads and rolls off, the DWR remains effective; if the fabric wets out, plan to reproof the garment.

 

Choose wash-in treatments for whole-garment coverage and sprays for targeted areas. Apply treatments to a clean, damp garment, and only reactivate them with heat if the care label permits; while heat can sometimes restore a garment’s durable water-repellent (DWR) finish, it may also damage laminated membranes. Inspect taped seams, zips, and storm flaps regularly, reseal seams with a compatible seam sealer, and patch small abrasions with appropriate repair tape to preserve structural waterproofing. If a membrane has delaminated, seek specialist repair to prevent water ingress and to extend the garment’s serviceable life. Dry garments completely before storing, hang or fold them loosely in a breathable bag or a well ventilated space, avoid long-term compression or damp storage, and air items after wet use to limit microbial growth and odour.

When choosing a jacket, check its MVTR, RET and hydrostatic head, inspect seam tape and storm flaps, and try the garment over the layers you normally wear so you can judge waterproofing, breathability and freedom of movement. MVTR indicates how quickly vapour passes through a fabric, RET measures resistance to evaporative heat loss and relates directly to comfort, and hydrostatic head quantifies the water pressure a fabric will withstand before leaking. Maintain the jacket's DWR by keeping the fabric clean; when water stops beading, reproof the membrane or re-wax waxed cotton, and mend worn taped seams with seam sealant or a professional repair. Store garments dry and loosely, on a broad hanger or folded in a breathable bag, so the fabric continues to perform and lasts longer.
